Session Plan

Session 1: Introduction and Recap

Understand the importance of structured projects and reproducible workflows. Recap data manipulation, regression commands, and do-file basics.

Includes a self-learning module to apply project structure and logging.

Session 2: Working with Variables, Labels, and Large Datasets

Learn how to clean and label data efficiently, manage large datasets, and optimize memory usage. Improve your dataset readability and consistency.

Includes a self-learning module focused on data preparation and cleaning.

Session 3: Deep Dive into Macros – Locals and Globals

Explore how macros work and how they can streamline your code. Learn best practices for reducing repetition and making your scripts adaptable.

Includes a self-learning module to practice using macros in applied tasks.

Session 4: Formatting and Exporting Tables and Figures

Generate clean tables and export results for reports and publications. Learn tools like esttab and outreg2, and how to export graphs with consistent formatting.

Includes a self-learning module to produce formatted tables and figures.

Session 5: Loops for Automation and Output

Use loops to manipulate data, create repetitive output, and avoid copy-pasting. Learn how to combine loops with macros and file handling for flexible workflows.

Includes a self-learning module to automate repetitive tasks.

Session 6: Data Management – Merging, Reshaping, and Efficient Storage

Master core data handling tasks like merging, appending, and reshaping. Use temporary files and variables to streamline your workflow and manage space.

Includes a self-learning module to organize and transform datasets efficiently.

Target Group

This course is designed for users who already have some background and experience in Stata and want to take their skills to the next level. It is ideal for researchers, analysts, and graduate students who use Stata regularly and are looking to work more efficiently and reproducibly.

Prerequisites

  • Basic experience with Stata (e.g., working with do-files, running regressions, manipulating datasets)
  • Access to Stata (version 15 or later, at least Intercooled) to implement what you learn

Additional Information

  • All teaching materials will be made available to participants
  • A certificate of completion will be issued after the course

Your Instructor

The course is taught by Jan Sauermann, professor at IFAU in Uppsala and founder of StataTeX Blog, one of the leading blogs for Stata code and applied econometrics. He brings extensive teaching experience and deep knowledge of state-of-the-art empirical methods to this hands-on training.
